How Not to Get a Job: The Details Count!

The details count! (los detalles cuentan)

From Javier Leiva Aguilera’s Spanish language Catorze blog (coming to you live from sunny Catalonia), a story about how the details count in a job search.

Let me try to translate into the English. Javier says:

A friend of mine works in HR at a consulting company. The company was seeking “a person with lots of experience in Internet media.” The company got 50 candidates, but 30 of those arrived from Hotmail addresses. They deleted all the Hotmail addresses. My friend gave the following reasoning:

You can’t pretend to pass for an expert in the Internet, and use a Hotmail account at the same time.

The moral of all this is that in the competitive professional world we live in, the details count (and how!).

My Core Ideas

1. "I can't tell you the best way to get a job - because there is no one best way. After 21 years of recruiting, I CAN share things I've seen candidates do to guarantee they DIDN'T get the job."

2. "Most companies don't realize how their recruiting process impacts their candidate pool, and their business. Attention to simple things will result in big improvements."
